Frequently Asked Questions

What type of mattresses and box springs are accepted for recycling?

Most mattresses and bed box springs are accepted. A few exceptions are:

  • Excessively torn, punctured, soiled or moldy items;
  • Twisted or crushed mattresses or broken box springs;
  • Mattresses or box springs infested with bed bugs or other pests;
  • Futons, mattress pads or toppers; or
  • Infant sleeping pads; air or water beds; any other furniture or textiles.
Do you pick up other items like couches, futons and appliances?

No. Aries mattress recycling will only pick-up standard mattresses and box springs

Are any items ineligible?

When it comes to mattress recycling, it’s important to note that mattresses or box springs that are excessively wet, heavily soiled, or visibly infested with mold and/or bed bugs will not be accepted. Such units are deemed ineligible for the recycling process. In the event that a unit is determined to be ineligible, our dedicated staff will affix a “rejected” sticker and capture photographic evidence to demonstrate the specific reasons for rejection. Consequently, you will have the option to request an additional pickup to dispose of the ineligible unit separately. By implementing these measures, we ensure that only suitable and recyclable mattresses are processed, maintaining the quality and sustainability of our recycling program.

Are there any conditional fees?

In situations where a curbside pickup is scheduled, it’s worth noting that if upon arrival no units are present for collection, we will provide photographic evidence confirming the absence of units at the designated pickup site. Consequently, in cases of a no show, a flat fee of $75.00 will be charged to the customer. However, if multiple units were originally scheduled for pickup and the number of units encountered exceeds the initially paid-for amount, we will capture a photo illustrating the additional units beyond what was paid for. In such circumstances, we retain the right, at our sole discretion, to either charge the customer the curbside collection fee for each extra unit or opt not to collect the additional units. This approach ensures fairness and transparency in managing curbside pickups, while allowing us to address any discrepancies that may arise effectively.

Why is recycling mattresses important?

The four major components of mattresses, namely foam, steel, textiles, and wood, hold significant recyclable value. When these components are discarded without recycling, we permanently lose valuable raw materials. Additionally, mattresses pose a unique challenge due to their significant space occupation in landfills. Moreover, the capacity for waste disposal in Massachusetts is diminishing, necessitating a shift towards recycling, composting, and reduction/reuse strategies. Consequently, starting from November 1, 2022, the disposal or transport of mattresses for disposal has been banned in Massachusetts. These transitional measures underscore the importance of responsible waste management and the urgent need to embrace recycling practices for mattresses.
